The East Anglian football community is continuing to support injured sportsmen Shaun Whiter and Joey Abbs.
Ahead of yesterday's (Saturday) Thurlow Nunn League clash between Newmarket Town and Great Yarmouth Town, The Bloaters donated £300 to the 'recovery fund for Shaun and Joey,' after they were seriously injured in a car crash on July 1.
Mr Whiter, 28, who was due to sign for Newmarket Town FC this season, had gone to help his friend Mr Abbs whose car had a puncture near Newmarket, when they were crushed by a car driven by Jan Adamec, who then fled the scene.
The collision led to both men suffering serious injuries, with Shaun having both of his legs amputated while Joey suffered severe leg injuries.
Last month Adamec, 40, of Shetland Road, Haverhill, pleaded guilty to two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and he was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court to 40 months (three years and four months) in prison.
Ahead of facing Newmarket Town away, Great Yarmouth Town FC chairman Mike Guymer said: 'This was all the players idea, and they will be donating their match day expenses to the recovery fund for Shaun and Joey.
'The club will also be donating some money as well. All the players wanted to do this and when something tragic like this happens it shows we are part of a football family and everyone rallies round.
'Its a hell of a gesture,' Mr Guymer said.
A spokesman for Newmarket Town FC said: 'Many thanks for the generous donation for the boys.'
And after a close contest, the Norfolk side returned home triumphant with a 2-0 away win as goals from Mitch Forbes and Charlie Bartram sealed the win.
