At the beginning of its 50th year, the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston committee of a national cancer charity set itself an ambitious challenge.
The Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Macmillan Cancer Support Committee decided that to mark its golden anniversary year, it would attempt to raise £50,000 - £1,000 for every year it has existed.
It was a goal chairman Michael Muskett admitted he never expected to actually achieve.
However, with a month to spare the committee is celebrating, after not only reaching the goal, but exceeding it.
Through a year of dedicated fundraising and variety of additional events - including a golf day and a cooking demonstration event with Galton and Tracy Blackiston - the committee has raised a staggering £51,479.60 for Macmillan.
Mr Muskett said: 'In our working history I do not feel we have had a better year, which is down to the sheer dedication of our members.
'We set the target at the start of the year, but never thought we would get anywhere near it, so we're all incredibly delighted.
'It says a lot about the people of Yarmouth and the surrounding area that they have been so generous - everybody knew we were trying to raise that extra bit more this year so dug in deeper.'
Lynn Bensly, committee treasurer added: 'I think the cause itself is a big factor for making people want to help.
'Cancer is something that affects everybody - either directly or through a loved one - which is why people are just so generous.'
Alongside their regular fundraising activities - which includes weekly collections at Seacroft in Hemsby - the committee went the extra mile this year, organising a greater number of events to ensure they hit their lofty target.
The golf day held in Caister raised more than £5,000 alone, with more than £3,000 added at the cooking demonstration.
At the committee's latest event, its Golden Ball, a cheque was presented to Macmillan representatives Rob Moon and Sema Hussein.
Mr Muskett and Mrs Bensly are joined on the 13 person committee by secretary Carol Calver, Sara Smith, Maureen and Bert Collins, Lyn Nichols, Tracy Cox, Peter Burman, Margaret Blackbourn, Wendy Potter, Enid Fitzgerald and Susan Page.
