Great Yarmouth fish and chip sellers have shown their support for a health initiative to reduce the amount of salt in people's diet.

Roger Millward, who has been running Roger's and Son fish and chip shop in St Peters Road for 30 years, joined LoSalt's campaign on Yarmouth sea front today to promote the brand and hand out free chips.

'We've been using Lo Salt at home for years so it made sense to offer it at the shop,' said Roger.

'It's on the counter next to the other salt. I suggest that people give it a try and they often say it tastes just like normal salt. If it didn't, I wouldn't be here supporting it.'

LoSalt is running a national 'GoLo' campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of reducing salt and sodium in the diet. Participating chip shops in Great Yarmouth are Rogers and Son; Fish 'N' Chick'N in Regent Road; Doggers Plaice in Ormesby Road; Harry Ramsden in Marine Parade; The Fish Inn in Rainbow Superstore; Fish and Grill in Marine Parade; Sea Chef in Marine Parade; and Charlie's Fish and Chip Shop in Nelson Road North.

The company said the average portion of fish and chips can contain 5g of salt which is 2g of sodium; more than 80 per cent of the maximum daily allowance of 6g for salt and 2.4g for sodium.

'As a seaside town, fish and chips are a huge part of our local heritage and do have a role to play as part of a healthy, balanced diet,' added Roger.

'People like fish and chips because it tastes great and almost all customers have salt on their meal. This initiative means we can offer them a healthier way to enjoy the same delicious flavour and we're delighted to be involved.'
