A grandmother appeared in court yesterday charged with murdering a pensioner in Norwich, almost a year after her death.

Josephine Dougan, 58, of Orchard Street, off Dereham Road, is charged with murdering Elsie Rees, 74, who lived at a flat in Canterbury Place, between June 13 and 16 last year.

She faces further charges of stealing a radio tuner, lamp clock, suitcase and bedding from the pensioner between the same dates.

Dougan is also alleged to have stolen cash, two clocks and a shopping trolley from Hazel Thompson between the same dates. She is also charged with attempted deception between January 1, 2003 and May 31 this year when she falsely claimed to Robert Burrell that she had cancer and needed money to pay for her treatment. Dougan, who appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court wearing a striped top, was remanded in custody and is due to appear at the crown court for a further hearing on June 16.

Mrs Rees, a grandmother-of-three and great-grandmother-of-five, was found dead at her home on June 15 last year. She had suffered a head injury. She had lived at Canterbury Place for more than 10 years and had been a neighbour of her twin sister Doris who moved into a residential home in March.
