Two professional golfers from the Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club will be attempting to complete 125 holes in one day in celebration of the club's 125th anniversary.

Andrew Collison and Ian Scott will begin their challenge at 3am tomorrow and will be racing against the clock to putt their last ball at around 10pm.

The challenge is one of the many celebrations and fundraisers being held at the club to mark the milestone.

Mr Collison, 45, who is the club's head professional, said: 'We've had a lot of people try to do 100 holes in a day and that's quite a challenge, but I don't think anyone has attempted 125.

'It is one hole short of seven rounds of golf so it is going to be extremely difficult. The most I have ever played in one day is 46 holes.

'But as we are celebrating 125 years we thought it had to be the number we try to reach.'

The men will have caddies to help them move around the course as quickly as possible and will not be stopping for any breaks.

Mr Collison said: 'It is going to be very tiring and I think we will be walking in excess of 40 miles.

'We have tried to keep reasonably fit and take it easy this week, and we will make sure we have lots of food and drink to keep us going.

'I think it will be a really good achievement, but I'm just looking forward to finishing it!'

The men have been collecting sponsorship individually and at the club for the last two months, which will be spent on new furniture for the club.

As part of the celebration, the club also organised a match against Fakenham Golf Club, which is also 125 years old, and a dinner dance is planned for July. Mr Collison said: 'It's nice to be celebrating 125 years and there is a great feel about the club at the moment.

'It has not always been easy over the last four or five years but the club is going from strength to strength. We have got a good membership, the course has really improved and we get great reviews from our visitors.'

The golf club was set up at Outney Common in 1889 following a meeting by six local men in the King's Head in January that year. They were FL Morrice of Ditchingham Hall, AH Jenney of Ditchingham Lodge, HJ Hartcup of The Bank House, CH Collison of Mettingham, Capt JP Meade of Earsham Hall and RC Mann of the maltsters Richard and William Mann.

At the inaugural meeting the chairman Mr Morrice said the object of the meeting was to 'consider the advisability of establishing a golf club.' After explaining the royal and ancient game of golf he briefly set out the probable requirements and expenses, and said it would benefit the town and provide a source of enjoyment for the neighbourhood. After obtaining permission from the owners of Bungay Common, it was unanimously resolved to form a golf club.

A president, captain, honorary secretary and treasurer were elected and the entrance fee and annual subscriptions were set.

By June 1889, the membership stood at 57, with two honorary members, 35 men and 20 women.

Today the club has just under 700 members and plays host to a variety of matches.
