The inquest into the death of a young boxer from Great Yarmouth who died days after being hospitalised in his very first fight begins today (Tuesday, September 10).
Jakub Moczyk - known as Kuba - died in the James Paget University Hospital on November 21, 2016, three days after being caught with a heavy punch in his debut bout. He was just 22 years old.
Today, a jury will hear evidence as an inquest looks to determine the reason for his death, in the first of what is scheduled to be a four day hearing.
Taking place at Great Yarmouth Magistrates' Court, the hearing follows an inquest opening which took place last November, at which area coroner Yvonne Blake said his medical cause of death was a traumatic brain injury. His full inquest was originally scheduled to take place on May 3, however, this was delayed to allow for further investigations to be carried out. A number of pre-inquest reviews were held while investigations continued into the circumstances of his death and the event at which he was competing - held at the Atlantis Arena, now known as the Tower Complex.
Mr Moczyk was knocked unconscious during the final round of his fight, before being taken to the James Paget University Hospital.
Mr Moczyk's twin sister - Magdalena Moczyk - had set up a GoFundMe page called Wake up Kuba in order to raise £20,000 for specialist treatment abroad.
She managed to raise more than £4,000 before he died surrounded by family.
In December, more than 200 people filled St Mary's RC Church in Great Yarmouth for his funeral, at which readings were given in both English and his native Polish.
