Forties in the Fields Had them dancing in the aisles in Haveringland
The 70th anniversary of the closure of RAF Swannington was marked with a ‘40s-themed event at a Norfolk church, which had people dancing in the aisles and singing along to wartime classics.
More than 100 people attended Haveringland Parish Church, on the edge of the former airbase, where the crowd enjoyed a flypast of wartime aircraft, thanks to friends at Felthorpe airfield.
Team vicar, the Rev’d Andrew Whitehead said: “When the anniversary of the base’s closure came up in discussion, we thought we should see if we could do something special as part of the Twelve Towers Festival, which ran across the churches of the Aylsham and District Ministry Team during June.”
The food on offer had a wartime theme, and there was a ration raffle with prizes including exotic fruit.
The anniversary will be marked in a more formal way at a remembrance event at the church on November 11.
