Staff and people visiting a day centre in Norwich had an unexpected surprise when a popular former Norwich City star turned up.

In a belated promotion celebration at the Essex Rooms, Darren Huckerby, was invited to meet some of the big Canaries fans at the daily luncheon club.

The star's appearance was organised by Norwich singer Pat James, who regularly entertains at the Essex Rooms, off Unthank Road.

Knowing that many of the staff were big fans, he organised the surprise visit yesterday.

Sheila Hawkes, manager of the Essex Rooms, said that a number of the girls who worked there had season tickets, including her, but it has been really good for the old people.

'They really enjoyed it and they got autographs and pictures for their children and grandchildren. He was very good with them,' she said.

The actual Essex Rooms is going to close, although it is not known when, but the service will still be provided in sheltered housing schemes.
