A former Great Yarmouth head boy will return to his old school years later as its director of music.

John Stephens will begin work with the Inspiration Trust in September, inspiring pupils to take up music both in and out of school time.

He will work across the trust's 14 East Anglian schools, including Great Yarmouth Charter Academy, formerly Great Yarmouth High School, where he was once head boy.

Raised in Great Yarmouth, Mr Stephens learned his craft at the school and played its pipe organ, before studying a music degree at the University of East Anglia. He has worked as a musical director across the globe, and, since 2006, has been director of music at Great Yarmouth Minster.

Mr Stephens said with music at schools 'experiencing great pressure nationally', it was 'refreshing' to find a role which would see him develop the area.

He said musical learning had a variety of benefits for students and schools as a whole.
