A former army major general and landowner has been sworn in as this year's High Sheriff for Norfolk.

Major General Sir William George Cubitt KCVO CBE, of Honing, North Walsham, was appointed at the home of Nicholas Pratt, the current High Sheriff, who lives in Ryston near Downham Market,

Sir William, who served 34 years in the army, said: 'I am deeply honoured to be the High Sheriff of Norfolk for the next year.

'I know that many people do amazing work without much public recognition and I hope to witness this and to highlight their endeavours. I have particular links with the East Anglian Air Ambulance and with the Royal British Legion so plan to help them also in my year as High Sheriff.'

During his four years in command of the army's presence in London, from 2007 to 2011, Sir William, of Honing, North Walsham, provided troops for events in the City and promoted the army with the City authorities and community.

As General Officer Commanding London District, Sir William was in charge of the military aspects of the wedding between the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The father-of-three was made OBE after active service in Kosovo in 1998 and promoted to CBE in 2005 following brigade command in Northern Ireland.

In Saxon times, High Sheriffs went to the king or queen's court to give account for the money they collected on behalf of the monarch.

Today they are often involved in charitable initiatives, raising awareness and funds for their chosen good causes.
