Frustrated residents in Thetford have again been forced to complain to their district council and housing associations after the blight of fly-tipping returned.

Communities in Glebe Close, Dane Close and St Martins Way have raised fears over house prices being hit and the risk of fires after rubbish was dumped by tippers.

People in the Glebe Close area have begun documenting the tipping, with items including a fridge, sofa, television and rubbish bags being found at garages this week.

On Wednesday, what appeared to be business waste - including concrete, and petrol cans - could be found at garages in Dane Close.

The tipping follows similar problems last year which saw waste at the Dane Close garages go up in flames.

Flagship Housing, who own and manage the garages, worked with Thetford Police to try and tackle to the problem, prompting a campaign to encourage people to report tippers.

But April Camp, whose Icknield Way home backs on to the Dane Close garages, said the problem had persisted.

'You might come out here and it will be quite clean one day, and then the next there will be all kinds of waste out here.

'My children used to come out here and ride their bikes and play but they can't do that now because there's broken glass everywhere,' she said.

A spokesman for Flagship insisted it is 'actively engaged' in an initiative to tackle fly-tipping alongside partner agencies including Environmental Health, councils, action groups and the police.

She also said community rangers had visited Dane Close on Thursday to clear waste.

A spokesman for Breckland Council confirmed it had reports of items being tipped this week, but that the items were on private land and it was unable to clear it.

She added that the council would be trying to work with the landowner to ensure 'swift and appropriate action'.

Thetford Community Association has bid for almost £20,000 from the Breckland Pride project to pay for a fly-tipping community support worker. The worker would work with local partners to initiate a high profile public awareness campaign about the detrimental effects of fly tipping.
