Work is ongoing to convert the Old Fire Station in Priory Road into a heritage and learning centre, and visitors are invited to wear a hard hat to look inside at the progress so far.

Dave Flower, chairman of the Downham Market and District Heritage Society Trustees, said: “We’re really looking forward to showing this building to the public.”

Mr Flower and his team at the heritage society were celebrating in March when the project was awarded the final £60,000 it needed by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The £650,000 total was raised through an initial lottery grant of £386,300, various other grants, and fundraising efforts from the 100-strong society.

“This really is a dream coming true for us,” he said. “It has taken us nine years to get this far, and we all absolutely thrilled it is happening.”

The new centre, which will be called ‘Discover Downham’, should be open in spring next year.

It will house the exhibition currently on display at the Downham Market Town Hall. There will also be an archive area and modern graphics which describe the town and the surrounding area.

Students from Downham Market Academy have also been working on designs for a new logo, which will be on display during the open day.

John Fox, the new mayor of Downham Market, said he is looking forward to the completion of Discover Downham during his tenure.

The Hard Hat Open Day at the Old Fire Station will take place on Sunday between 10am and 1pm. Visitors are advised to wear sensible clothes and flat shoes.
