Fears that a man was trapped in his car sparked a 999 response – only for emergency crews to discover the man they were there to rescue was just taking a nap.

According to the police, a member of the public grew concerned on Thursday afternoon when they noticed a man in his 30s appeared to be locked in his vehicle on Theatre Street, in Dereham.

They alerted the emergency services and a fire crew was dispatched to the scene at around 3.15pm.

The fire crew released the man from the vehicle and discovered that he was visiting the town and had decided to take a quick nap while the woman he was travelling with had gone to look at a local hotel.

The East of England Ambulance service was called to the scene by the fire service at 3.28pm to treat the man for possible heat exposure but he did not have to be taken to hospital.
