This couple may have met on Bonfire Night, however, there was no need for fireworks when they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Instead, a quiet country meal with family was plenty good enough for Brian and Mary Barton as they celebrated 60 years of happy marriage.

The pair, who settled in Filby around 20 years ago, married on June 22, 1957, after first setting eyes on one another on Guy Fawkes night in their home town of Crowborough, East Sussex.

Mr Barton said: 'I was a bit timid and I remember her having around 15 friends with her, but we really took to each other.'

Mrs Barton added: 'It was so dark that we could barely see each other but we followed the procession around together,'

The pair lost regular contact, but a chance meeting with his future wife's sister saw him invited to a birthday party, which led to the couple meeting up again and this time stayed in touch.

Mr Barton, 84, spent most of his life serving in the RAF Police, while Mrs Barton, 82 worked as a nursery nurse and a nanny.

Mr Barton's work meant much of their married life was spent apart, however, this has not stood in their way.

Mrs Barton said: 'It is difficult to live apart, especially with four children, but we wrote to each other almost every day.'

Mr Barton would be stationed away from his family for several months at a time, while there was also a time Mrs Barton and the children were based in Cyprus.

In his time Mr Barton was stationed in such countries as Libya, Northern Ireland and France, as well as Cyprus.

The pair wed at St John's in Crowborough

Mr Barton said: 'It was a lovely service, the whole family came.

They have four children, Andrew, Lorraine, Peter and Trevor, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

They toasted their anniversary with a pub dinner in Neatishead with two of their children, with another celebration to be held with the whole family soon.

Mrs Barton said: 'We don't always agree on things, but whenever we argue we sort it out. We always make up and make sure we resolve our disagreements'

Her husband added: 'We never go to sleep on an argument.

'I love this woman.'

They moved to Norfolk in 1983, first living in Potter Heigham, then Filby, where they still live..
