A Twenty20 cricket match is being held as part of a festival to mark the 125th anniversary of the death of Maharajah Duleep Singh.

Thetford Town Cricket Club will play the friendly match against Punjab Five Rivers Cricket, a team of Sikh players from Gravesend.

Held on Sunday, July 8, the match is part of the Festival of Thetford and Punjab.

Duleep Singh, the Last King of the Punjab, purchased Elveden Hall in 1863.

Teams will be playing for the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Cricket Trophy - named after the father of Duleep Singh.

Held at Thetford Town Cricket Club, on Mundford Road, the event will include a bar and Punjabi food stall selling bhajis and curries. There will also be a Dhol drummer and Bhangra DJ.

Indi Sandhu, festival director, said: “We are keen to create an Indian Premier League (IPL) type of atmosphere with lots of music and drumming to cheer the players on from both teams.”

Admission is free and all are welcome. The match will run from 2pm until 6pm.

Organised by the Essex Cultural Diversity Project (ECDP), the Festival of Thetford and Punjab will run between July 7 and 21.

Thetford Library, Ancient House Museum and Elveden Village Hall will host activities as part of the festival.

Speakers include, journalist and author of The Boy with the Top Knot, Sathnam Sanghera; Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha, and comedian and presenter Hardeep Singh Kohli.

On July 21 the festival will merge with Thetford Town Council’s River Festival to create one large celebratory event.

A wide-range of activities including turban tying, henna painting and storytelling, will be taking place along the River Ouse.

A procession through the town centre will see collaboration between Bhangra and Morris dancers and Bhangra Dhol Drummers.
