Safety fears have been raised after an access-only road has seen an increase in traffic using it as a 'rat-run' in Long Stratton.

Residents of St Michael's Road have rallied together to push for changes to be made as drivers fed up with long queues on the A140 cut through the residential road at dangerous speeds.

Linking the A140 to Swan Lane, the road has a speed limit of 20 miles per hour and regularly sees drivers using the road to access services on Swan Lane especially during peak times.

A residents survey has raised safety fears and claims the road's access-only status is regularly abused and the speed and sheer volume of traffic is on the increase.

Home owners fear this will become worse with a new housing development in progress to the west of the village and have written to South Norfolk Council and Norfolk Police to voice their concerns.

Organiser Steve Lansdell, a 54-year-old paramedic, said: 'There has been a massive increase in traffic and speed on the road. This is an access-only road and a number of homes have been hit by cars coming off the bends too quickly. It was never meant to take main road traffic.'

The survey, completed by 107 households, reports a number of changes residents would like to see including improvements to no entry signs, illuminated speed signs and speed humps.

Abbie Jones-Docherty, 34, said: 'The amount of traffic we get cutting through is increasing and because of the new housing it is only going to get worse.

'I'm worried about the amount of traffic that is going to be here when my son is older. It's a safety issue really, people don't need to use it.'

With a report due on the village action plan by November, including the proposal for a bypass and 1,800 new homes, Mr Lansdell said: 'Most people I know want to see the bypass as soon as possible, but they will believe it when they see it.'
