They say when one door closes, another one opens.

That is especially true for Norwich's Fat Cat Pub, which will be shutting its doors to the public next month for the first time in 27 years to undergo a refurbishment.

While punters at the popular West End Street drinking spot will have to head elsewhere, they won't have far to go for a pint - and it will all feel very familiar.

The pub closes for three weeks from May 14, with another of the owner's businesses picking up the slack.

Throughout the refurbishment period, landlord Colin Keatley will open The Fat Percy on Adelaide Street to welcome thirsty customers.

Formerly The Perserverance Pub, Mr Keatley bought the venue in 2016 and converted it into a space to be used for private functions and parties.

His son, Will Keatley, manager of the Fat Cat, said: 'The Fat Cat Pub will be closed for three weeks in May, apart from New Year's Eve, this will be the first time we have closed since originally opening in December 1991.

'During this time, we will be opening The Fat Percy, offering a range of real ales, ciders and craft beers and lagers.

'We'll be operating on the same opening hours as usual and hope our customers will still come and visit us during this time.'

The refurbishment of The Fat Cat Pub will include renovated toilets, a new bar top, new flooring, a fresh coat of paint and a general freshen up.

However Mr Keatley ensures that 'the old Victorian charm' of the building will not be lost in the process.

The Fat Percy is the fourth venue under the Fat Cat umbrella, with two other businesses in the city - The Fat Cat Bewery Tap on Lawson Road and The Fat Cat and Canary on Thorpe Road as well as the Fat Cat Pub.
