An extensive search took place off the coast of Winterton this evening following reports that a paraglider may have gone into the water.

A spokesman for the coastguard said that a man had contacted them at about 6.50pm to report a possible sighting of a paraglider going into the water about 500 yards from the shore.

The coastguard spokesman said both the Happisburgh RNLI lifeboats were involved in the search, as well as the independent lifeboats at Hemsby and Sea Palling, and that coastguard teams from Winterton, Mundesley and Happisburgh had also been doing shore searches.

The coastguard helicopter was also out searching the area.

Shortly before 11.30pm a coastguard spokesman said the search was standing down.

The spokesman said: 'We are standing down from it [the search] pending any further information at this current stage. The area has been searched by multiple units and we are standing down.'
