Dereham's local air cadet unit is holding an open evening tonight to show what exciting opportunities it can offer.

The 1249 (Dereham) Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) is open to boys and girls from the age of 12, if already in year 8, to 17 and will welcome visitors to the squadron headquarters on Norwich Road from 7.30pm for a presentation then the chance to chat with existing cadets and staff.

Flight Lt Tracey Allan said. 'Some say there in not much for the youth of Dereham, but we can give people the opportunity to try flying, gliding, shooting, fieldcraft, sports and voluntary work.

'In addition cadets have the chance to attend camps across the UK and even overseas in Cyrus, Gibraltar or even on Ascension Island.

'We have recently been selected as the best squadron in Norfolk & Suffolk Wing and we already have a jam packed calendar for the rest of 2017 and heading into 2018.'

After the presentation, visitors will be shown some of the activities cadets participate in, this can include a fieldcraft scenario and demonstration, first aid, and a display about adventure training.

1249 (Dereham) Squadron meets every Monday and Thursdays evening from 7pm until 9.30pm, in the Squadron Headquarters behind the TA Centre on Norwich Road, Dereham.

Comprehensive training is given in everything from how to iron to leadership and development.
