The 1 charge for parking in Hunstanton's pay-and-display car parks during the evenings is being temporarily suspended for the rest of the summer season, West Norfolk council said today.

It said the move came in response to concerns raised by the Hunstanton Chamber of Trade and seafront traders.

Parking will be free in Hunstanton from 6pm until 8am from Sunday until Wednesday, October 31.

West Norfolk council leader Nick Daubney said: 'The chamber of trade and seafront traders have contacted me regarding car park charges. Trading conditions have been particularly poor this year because of the inclement weather.

'Tourism is important to the economy of West Norfolk and removing this charge is a small measure we can take which will hopefully help businesses for the rest of this season.'

William Searle, chairman of Hunstanton Chamber of Trade, said: 'We are delighted that the Borough Council has been able introduce this temporary offer.

'We hope it will encourage people into Hunstanton while the evenings are light and help to support our local economy.'

The temporary offer is in place until 31 October and applies to evening car parking charges only. Normal car park charges apply during the day.
