Ahead of next year's RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, bosses at the reserve at Titchwell Marsh are inviting people to pay a visit and see woodland birds up close.

The world's largest wildlife survey started in 1979 as an activity for the RSPB's junior members.

More than half a million took part in the last survey, and the next event will be held over the weekend of January 30-31.

But before then, RSPB Titchwell Marsh is inviting people to join in a day of activities on Saturday, January 9.

Weather permitting, there will be a bird-ringing demonstration.

There will also be a guided walk and the chance to make a bird feeder or birdie seed cake to take home.

And the family-friendly event will offer younger visitors the chance to take part in games, quizzes and puzzles.

Paul Eele, warden for the RSPB's North Norfolk Reserves, said the Big Garden Birdwatch was about far more than just birds.

The RSPB protects threatened birds, other wildlife and the places where they live, so they will always be there for future generations.

He said: 'Which birds you'll see can vary depending on where you live, what food you use and where it is placed.

'But one thing's for certain: spend a little time preparing the ideal environment for our feathered friends and you're sure to give nature a home in your garden.'

RSPB Titchwell Marsh's special birdwatch day on January 9 will run from 10am until 3pm. The bird-ringing demonstration is 10am-1pm and the guided walk and activity from 11am and 2pm. For further information or to book a place, call 01485 210779 or go to www.rspb.org.uk/titchwell

The RSPB website is now live with information on how to take part in the survey, including using a live bird counter. Results can be completed digitally on a laptop or a smartphone.
