For decades, the city centre's drinking fountains have been running dry, long since out of commission.

Now, Green councillors are hoping to quench Norwich's lack of the facilities, by motioning to reintroduce them to the city.

City councillors Lesley Graham and Simeon Jackson plan to raise the motion at a meeting of the council chamber next week, as a latest measure to reduce plastic pollution in the city.

Ms Grahame said not only would reintroducing the fountains reduce the number of plastic bottles people throw away, but it would also benefit people's health. She said: 'Water is fundamental to our health and is the healthiest thing we can drink. Nobody should be denied access to it.

'Norwich has the opportunity to follow many other cities and introduce drinking fountains that are well used and popular.'

Ms Grahame's motion will implore fellow councillors to explore the possibility, looking into the feasibility of installing fountains across the city.

She added the most obvious place to start would be reinstalling those that had previously served the function, rather than installing brand new fountains.
