Drivers will face diversions during modications to one of the most important sluices in the Fens.

Environment Agency engineers want to remove the countweight from the Big Eye, at Denver Sluice, near Downham Market.

The gate - so-named because it was designed to open and close according to the tides - is not thought to have been repaired since it was built in around 1925.

In its planning application, the EA says: 'The structure is not in use and the future deterioration of the counterweight structure may represent a risk to the public and integrity of the structure as a whole. Therefore, it has been proposed to remove the counterweight in the Big Eye structure.'

Sluice road will be closed between the Relief Channel and Jenyns Arms from November 14 - December 14. Drivers will face diversions via the A10 and Ten Mile Bank. The pub will be closed Monday - Thursday inclusive while work is in progress.
