Cutting food and drink waste by 20pc over the next decade is the goal of the 'Courtauld Commitment 2025', which North Norfolk District Council has just become the first authority in Norfolk to sign.
The agreement, led by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) hopes to make food and drink production and consumption more sustainable.
Signatories are asked to promote changes in consumption habits by spreading a 'love food, hate waste' message.
Councillor Nigel Lloyd said: 'We are very pleased to be the first Norfolk council to sign this important agreement.
'Resource efficiency and waste avoidance are central elements of reducing waste across the food and supply chain. We look forward to working with Wrap to take the project forward.'
The council has already taken steps towards the goal with projects such as the Norfolk Waste Partnership and the Fakenham community fridge.
