Young bookworms enjoy Bookstart celebrations at Norwich’s Millennium Library

Young bookworms have been enjoying special celebrations to mark the 20th anniversary of a programme that aims to inspire children to enjoy reading.

The Bookstart birthday party took place at Norwich's Millennium Library today where an enthusiastic crowd of youngsters enjoyed a morning of fun. Story-telling, birthday cake, a Peppa Pig treasure hunt, and a special visit from the Bookstart Bear were among the festivities.

Community librarian Gwen Parker said encouraging children to read at an early age helped to give them a good start in life. 'As well as celebrating Bookstart's birthday, we have also been trying to raise the profile of Bookstart and asking people to support Bookstart by pledging to read 20 books to their children in 2012,' she said.

Bookstart, which is run by the charity Booktrust, first started in Birmingham 20 years ago and has been active in Norwich for more than a decade.
