A city high school could see its community roots reflected in a new name when it becomes an academy.

Sewell Park College is expected to convert to its new status on September 1, when it is due to be taken over by the Norwich-based Right for Success chain of academies.

The prospective sponsor, together with the school's current interim governors, has launched a consultation with pupils, staff, parents and the wider community about its future name.

Two options given on a survey on the school's website are The Blyth Academy, which harks back to the era of Blyth Grammar School, and Sewell Park Academy, which reflects the name it took after succeeding Blyth-Jex High School.

The online survey also gives people the option of proposing other names, and new headteacher Penny Bignell said a new favourite had emerged among pupils: St Clement's Academy, reflecting the school's position on St Clement's Hill.

Mrs Bignell said: 'People definitely want something rooted in the local area to continue. The trust is very keen that it's something that's chosen with the community.'
