A high school has taken in a record number of new students, after governors chose to accept 120 Year 7 applicants.

Alderman Peel High School in Wells usual limits itself to 105 students in a year group, but chose to exceed this in accepting applications from more than 20 primaries.

The school's principal, Alastair Ogle, said: "In 2010 we had 304 students, but now we teach 518, with more classes to make sure children get the support they need.

"We have made new classrooms, including in the new languages block, and brought in new staff, who will help the large Year 7 intake but also work throughout the school.

"The school now is nearly full in all year groups, a testament to the hard work of all the staff at Alderman Peel High School, the governors and our local community.

"We hope to continue to grow in future, and will decide future intake sizes based on the number of applications."
