A primary which has faced 'entrenched low standards' is taking steps towards improvement, its first report since becoming an academy says.

Ofsted inspectors visited Tuckswood Academy and Nursery in February, for the first time since it became an academy under the Right for Success Trust in 2015.

The watchdog said it was good in two areas, but that it required improvement overall.

They said: 'Since the school opened, the trust has faced entrenched low standards and a history of underachievement. Overcoming these issues has taken time and a wealth of resources.'

They said the trust had been 'steadfast in its view that weak leadership and mediocre teaching are not good enough', and that leaders had been 'resilient in carrying through improvements, despite the uphill struggle'.

Inspectors said teaching needed to improve, but praised pupils' behaviour and welfare and noted that improvements were beginning to show across the school.

A report published after the visit said relationships with parents were improving, which was resulting in better communication.

'The trust and governors have worked diligently to overcome the historical challenges that they faced when the school opened,' they said. 'They have now secured a stable staffing team that is starting to bring about more secure improvements.'

Valerie Moore, chief executive of the trust, said: 'We work hard with our schools to develop not only the pupils' learning but the careers of our staff. Tuckswood is a fantastic example of the two working together.'

Ian Winter, headteacher at the school, said: 'It's tremendous to see that inspectors found that staff value the support they receive and that they are proud to work here.'

He said engagement with the community was key, and that more parents were now visiting the school.

To improve, Ofsted said the school should develop the effectiveness of leaders and improve teaching quality.

In February, the school unveiled the results of a major £360,000 revamp, which saw new classrooms, additions to the outside area and new toilets.
