The school revealed last June it was considering converting.

In a letter to parents and carers today, chair of governors Linda Bennett said: 'This was not a decision taken lightly. The governing body has taken its time to ensure that we had all the information required to make an informed resolution.'

The reasons for choosing Right for Success included 'their experience in supporting disadvantaged young people', and their links to important businesses.

A total of 98 completed a consultation questionnaire about the proposed conversion, representing 4.5pc of the parental body, and 10.5pc of the staff members.

Overall, 49pc of respondents expressed opposition to it becoming a Right for Success academy, compared with 43pc who signalled support.

A majority of parents said they were against conversion, with opposition running at 54pc to 41pc. Among staff, 43pc were against, and 33pc were in support.

Headteacher Andrew John said: 'The governing body has voted to apply to the secretary of state for approval to convert to academy status with the Right for Success academy trust. The governing body has taken time since June of last year to make that decision.

'We are confident that the trust supports the school's core ethos of 'supporting the whole child to achieve their full potential'.

'I am pleased that governors have recognised the national government view that every school should belong to a multi-academy trust.'
