Skiers from around the country met on the edge of Norwich for a ski competition for athletes with learning difficulties.

Thirteen skiers from Norfolk were joined by more than 40 others from elsewhere around the UK on Sunday for the event, run by Special Olympics Norfolk.

Hosted at the Norfolk Snowsport Club in Trowse, the event included slalom and grand slalom races and was opened by ITV Anglia presenter Becky Jago.

Among those taking part was Karen Oosthuizen, from Surrey, a gold and silver medallist at the World Winter Games, which were held in Austria in March.

Special Olympics is a worldwide movement for athletes with learning disabilities, with the Norfolk branch supporting about 70 athletes in seven sports - alpine skiing, athletics, artist gymnastics, boccia, cricket, football and swimming.

Nicola Fish, Special Olympics Norfolk chairman, said: “Being able to hold a winter games competition here in Norfolk is fantastic for our athletes. We are continuing to grow the sports on offer in Norfolk and want to help more athletes represent their county and hopefully their country.”

At the end of the event, Norfolk competitors took home 12 gold, four silver and five bronze medals, with four skiers - Annabelle Lamb, George Burroughs, Alex Fearne and Becky Ferry - winning gold in both slalom and giant slalom events.
