New signs have been installed to warn drivers to slow down on a stretch of road outside a school.

Two flashing signs advising of a 20mph speed limit have been put up outside Alderman Swindell Primary School on Keyes Avenue.

Paula Waters-Bunn, who has campaigned for the new signs, said: 'Many people over the years have tried to get speed restrictions in place around the school, as it is on an island and surrounded by four roads.

'Keyes Avenue, is used quite heavily by fast traffic cutting through and avoiding the Caister Road.

'The children at the school are put at risk by these careless people who think that speeding in such a close vicinity of a school is okay.'

Two years ago, former councillor Charles Marsden, who has now retired, submitted a petition to County Hall, which was signed by a large number of local residents, who expressed deep concern for the safety of the schoolchildren.

The 'Twenty is Plenty' campaign was also supported by the North Yarmouth Road Safety Group.

Alderman Swindell is to take on more pupils, which is what Ms Waters-Bunn said had concerned the People of North Yarmouth community group and made them take action.

She added: 'After lots of red tape was battled through, and quotes for the work were obtained, the most affordable and cost effective scheme was selected to put up the signs.'

The funding was donated by local councillors from their ward budgets.

Yarmouth North ward councillors Colin Fox and Rachel Jones, supplied £3,520 from their ward budgets for the scheme, with Cllr Fox putting forward his whole fund. Cllr Malcolm Bird of Central and Northgate ward, donated £500 of his budget.

Ms Waters-Bunn: 'We are very thankful to these ward councillors and are pleased we have worked together to get improvements made here.'
