Children at an infants' school are celebrating being the first in the country to have a new type of board game on their playground.

Drayton Community Infant School, on School Road, has had a game invented in Colombia painted on their playing area.

The Magic Square is a human-sized board game designed to help children learn the basics of mathematics through play.

Madeline Ward, a teacher at the school, said: 'We are very excited that our Magic Square has been finished and is the first one painted in this country. The school council voted for the project and donated its annual budget to it and additional funds were raised during a non-uniform day.

The rest of the money was raised on a Sunday during half-term when some children, their fathers and Mr and Mrs Sergeant from Owl Class undertook a NR8 Funny Run.

'They did a fantastic job and we are extremely grateful to them,' Miss Ward added.

The aim of the game is to teach children the basic of numbers one to 100, giving them knowledge and confidence in the areas of addition, subtraction and multiplication.

It also familiarises them with colours and basic shapes and helps develop creativity, imagination and social interaction.
