The sporting stars of the future could be seen as they ran, jumped and threw for glory on day four of the Norfolk Winter School Games.

The penultimate day of the week-long event saw more than 250 secondary schoolchildren descend on UEA Sportspark to take part in Sportshall athletics.

In the morning, aspiring athletes, who would not normally have the opportunity to take part in high level sporting competitions, were given their moment to shine.

While the afternoon's county final saw the cream of the crop from right across Norfolk take part in running races, relays, standing long-jump competitions, vertical jump, speed bounce and shot put.

The noise was deafening as youngsters cheered on their teammates from the sidelines.

Vanessa Boon, one of the School Games organisers, said: 'It was a really buzzing atmosphere with the music and the children cheering.

'It's a short, sharp and intense competition and you could see some really, really good talent - and that wasn't from just one partnership but across the board.'

Adam Burgess, East and East Midlands development officer for Sportshall UK, said: 'It's brilliant to see 200-plus athletes from across Norfolk competing and enjoying themselves.

'A lot of current GB athletes started their career in Sportshall athletics and the hope is that some of the athletes we have seen today will go on and replicate that and help create a strong GB team in the future.'

Today marked day four of the Norfolk Winter School Games, which will come to an end tomorrow with a flagship day at the UEA Sportspark.

Sports which have already taken place include skiing, tag rugby, badminton and cross country.

The competitions are the culmination of months of inter- and intra- school races and matches.

Each youngster is representing one of eight school sport partnerships.

Alex Watkinson, 13, a pupil at Thorpe St Andrew High School, said he felt 'very proud' to have competed and represented Norwich East School Sport Partnership.

He added: 'It was really enjoyable. I liked the running, taking part and the competitiveness of it. I feel very proud to have got this far.'

Fellow Thorpe St Andrew High School pupil Milli Shaw, 12, said: 'I enjoyed the excitement and everyone cheering me on. It was a real experience, great fun and I felt like part of the community.'

The Sainsbury's Norfolk School Games is sponsored by Active Norfolk, Norfolk School Sport Partnerships and the UEA Sportspark, with the Eastern Daily Press and BBC Radio Norfolk as media partners.
