Ofsted has ruled Ormiston Venture Academy to be 'outstanding' on every measure, making it the first sponsored academy in the region to achieve that grading.

In their report published on Thursday, inspectors said the 'inspired' leadership of principal Nicole McCartney had transformed the quality of education at the school.

They also said student behaviour 'is exemplary,' children wore their uniforms with pride, students who started with low levels of literacy were promptly taught how to read and write and there was a 'relentless drive' to improve teaching.

The Gorleston school, sponsored by the Ormiston Academies Trust, opened in September 2010 on the site of the former Oriel High. It specialises in digital media and mathematics and has 618 students.

Identifying what could be improved, inspectors said the academy could enhance students' learning even further by providing them with additional, complementary resources to use in maths lessons and in their own time and help them make better use of personal learning time to improve their personal, social and health education.

Peter Murray, chairman of Ormiston Trust, said: 'This is a fantastic success story and Ormiston Venture Academy is a great example of what Ormiston is trying to achieve.

'The academy's transformation to outstanding shows how hard work and dedication can give young people the opportunity to flourish, whatever their circumstances.'

Ms McCartney added: 'The new Ofsted framework is rightfully incredibly rigorous. To be graded outstanding means that true education, quality learning and teaching, happens in this academy every day. Further, that what we're doing at Ormiston Venture is sustainable.

'There are no silver bullets and no secret recipes. There is just a relentless drive for students' success, enjoyment of learning and bright futures.'

Inspectors also praised governors and said they provided 'excellent support', which has been 'invaluable' in helping the principal drive improvements.
