A Norwich university has been crowned the best in the country for its strong links with the gaming industry.

Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) was crowned the UK's Best Educational Institution 2017 in the The Independent Game Developers' Association's (TIGA) ceremony.

Now in their fifth year, the awards honour the best games, businesses and practitioners in the UK gaming sector.

NUA was one of eight universities in the running for the best institution award, and was chosen as winner at a ceremony in London earlier this month.

The judges were looking for a 'world-leading' institution with a track record of 'delivering high proportions of its students into graduate level jobs'.

Mark Wickham, NUA games, art and design course leader, said: 'TIGA was looking for a world-leading education institution for this award and we're delighted that NUA was the judges' choice. We're really proud of the innovative work by both NUA staff and students.

'Most of all, this award is welcome recognition of our track record in helping graduates launch successful careers in the games industry.'

The university was also named a finalist in the Best Education Initiative and Talent Development category.

NUA offers a variety of courses in games design, including its BA degree, which is part of the PlayStation First Academic Development Programme and also holds Apple University Developer Status.

The UK gaming industry has enjoyed exponential growth - last year, the financial value of the sector rose to £4.3bn, and its impact on other sectors, including films and merchandise, to £100.5m.

Richard Wilson, TIGA chief executive, said: 'At the largest TIGA awards ceremony so far we highlighted excellence in games and business, education and technology, diversity and creativity. I would like to offer huge congratulations to all of our winners and finalists, whose innovation, creativity and excellence is driving the games industry forward.'
