A school is going green as it bids to build an energy efficient dining hall to replace its current “poor quality” one.
Norwich Road Academy, in Thetford, has lodged plans with Breckland Council to demolish its existing hall, which is described as too small and of poor quality, to create an eco-friendly dining hall.
It would feature solar panels on the roof and would use no fossil fuels in heating or powering cookers. Extra energy that is generated by the solar panels will be sent into the school's main building.
The main building of the school was built in the 1860s with a number of blocks built around the school throughout the 20th century.
The new hall is being funded by the Department for Education and has been designed to meet new guidelines.
It will have a large dining area, kitchen, toilets and storage space.
The plans have been made by Net Zero Buildings by Lyall, Bills and Young Architects, on behalf of the school.
