Children across Norwich were involved in a road safety poster competition aimed at getting motorists to drive safely and park legally around schools.

Norwich City Council identified areas particularly affected by parking and speed problems and joined forces with Norfolk County Council's road safety team to talk to five schools about the dangers.

The schools involved were Mile Cross, St Francis of Assisi and Bignold, all primary schools, and St Michael's and Lionwood Junior schools.

As part of the project, children, aged five to 11-years-old, at each school were asked to come up with their own designs to raise awareness of the issues.

An overall winner from each of the schools was chosen to have their poster printed and these will be displayed outside their gates over the coming months.

Mike Stonard, the city council's cabinet member for transportation, said: 'The children really got behind the campaign and came up with some fantastic poster designs to get their message across.

'We hope these will have a positive and lasting impact in getting people to make sure they park and drive appropriately, improving safety near school gates.'

Stuart Allen, headteacher at Mile Cross Primary, said he hoped the slogans on the posters would help put the idea of road safety across.

Over the first two weeks of the campaign, civil enforcement officers, PCSOs and neighbourhood officers will be in these areas to reinforce the importance of the messages.
