Two Norfolk teachers are in the running for top awards.

Jane Brown, PE lead at Brundall Primary School, and Dale McMorran, director of boarding and behaviour at Wymondham College, have made the shortlist in this year's national Pearson Teaching Awards.

The awards are in their 20th year and celebrate exceptional teachers.

They were founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam and recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach.

Entries for teachers, lecturers, teaching assistants and heads came from across schools and colleges in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The shortlisted 69 nominees are across 12 categories.

Mrs Brown is one of eight people in the teacher of the year in a primary school category.

In an online post on the school website she talks about the importance of swimming as a fun and potentially life-saving activity for youngsters.

Mr McMorran is one of nine people in the teacher of the year in a secondary school category, sponsored by SSAT.

He previously organised a 7,385-mile walking and running challenge at Wymondham College for pupils.

The March to Malawi fundraiser, which covered the distance from Morley to Malawi, raised money for Sparkle Malawi - a charity which changes the lives of people in the African country.

Other award categories include excellence in special needs education; further education lecturer of the year; further education team of the year; headteacher of the year in a primary school; headteacher of the year in a secondary school; lifetime achievement; outstanding new teacher of the year; school of the year; teaching assistant of the year; and outstanding use of technology in education.

The silver award winners will be announced at schools and colleges on June 22.

These winners will attend a celebratory tea at the House of Commons in London.

The ultimate winners of each category will be awarded with a gold Plato award, known as the Oscars for teachers, this autumn.

That celebration will take place on October 21 in London and will be televised by the BBC on October 28.
