An “exciting new road safety initiative” will be unveiled at a Lowestoft-area primary school this week.

With four junior road safety officers having been chosen at St Margaret’s Primary Academy in Lowestoft, the new recruits will have their appointment ratified as the scheme is launched at an assembly on Friday, October 19.

Steve Harris, a cover teacher at the school in Church Road, Lowestoft and a former police officer, said: “Children were invited to write an application letter to be considered for the role detailing their thoughts and ideas on promoting road safety in the school.”

The four lucky applicants who were selected to be road safety officers were Charlie Newstead, Year 4, Indi-May Flack, Year 5, Chloe Hutcheson, Year 6, and Lillia Boulter-Kent also Year 6. The initial launch on Friday is timed to coincide with a Be Bright Be Seen day at the school.

Mr Harris said: “All the children are encouraged to wear as bright clothing as possible for the day to highlight the dangers of the approaching dark evenings in the gloomy winter months ahead.”

Pupils were also encouraged to produce a Be Bright Be Seen poster outlining the dangers of wearing dark clothing in winter as part of a competition, which was open to the whole school – and the winner and runner up, who will both receive prizes of road safety equipment, will be announced during assembly.

Mr Harris added: “Other road safety themes will be looked at by the children throughout the coming year, including cycle safety, Green Cross Code and school gate parking by parents.

“Keeping our children as safe as possible in our school is our number one priority.”
