Last week pupils at Corton Primary School enjoyed taking part in a series of practices and activities associated with a Muslim group or community as an Islam Day was held.

With Buddhism and Sikhism days also having been held at the primary school in The Street in the past, the pupils took part in some Islamic practices associated with a Muslim group or community last Monday, January 22.

Jemma Dalley, early years teacher and Religious Education leader, said: 'This was one of the three faith days which are held each year. All year groups join together and work in mixed age groups.

'These days are always special as it is most rewarding to witness the positive interaction between age groups.'

Although Corton Primary is a Church of England school the Religious Education subject of the school curriculum allows for the exploration of other beliefs and faiths.

Mrs Dalley added: 'Activities varied from 'Wudu' involving washing the hands, arms, head and feet with water and this is an important part of ritual purity.'

The children also enjoyed learning about Ramadan and Worship, as pupils worked together to create 'beautiful' prayer mats.

Mrs Dalley added: 'The variety of experiences broadened pupils' experiences and understanding of Islam. Faith days provide our pupils with a set of skills to help pupils understand and discuss different religions.'

Among the reactions from the enthusiastic children, Enya K said: 'I learned that not all people that wear a headscarf are Muslim,' Oscar B added: 'I liked doing the Wudu in the water, it was very relaxing.'

Kayley C said: 'I liked learning about Ramadan the best, I'm going to try and save my cake until night time.'

'I can't believe how much Muslims pray, it is interesting how they do it,' Finlay R said, while Anna H added: 'Muslim ladies have to cover up their skin, it is different in different countries.'
