Campaigners fighting plans to convert the Hewett School into an academy have announced plans for a protest march.

The We Back Hewett group asked people who oppose the school joining the Inspiration Trust to gather by the war memorial outside Norwich City Hall at noon on Saturday.

The protest will end in Chapelfield Gardens with speeches and music.

Campaigner Stephen Little said: “People don’t often march for a school, but I think this is really important. It will probably soon be the last non-academy high school in the city council area, and we particularly want to draw attention to the manner in which it’s being rushed through without taking people’s views into account.”

In a statement last week, the Inspiration Trust said: “Provided we are given the opportunity, we are looking forward to working very closely with the local community in the transformation of Hewett.”

More than 1,100 people have signed an online petition against academisation.
