Improved GCSE results for all in south west Norfolk

Thetford Academy celebrates their 'best ever results' as GCSE scores are revealed.

Pupils and teachers were thrilled to find out that their school attained its best results yet.

The school has seen an improvement from 18pc last year to 32pc this year, of students who received a grade 5 and above in English and maths.

Dan Carter, principal of the academy said: "They are our best ever results in the history of the school and they are a massive improvement on previous years.

"On grade fours we have also gone up from 39pc to 51pc. This cohort has performed amazingly well. They are an amazing group of kids and there are some individuals here today with some really fantastic results.

"Last year less than one in five children got a strong pass in English and maths and now it is one in three."

Despite recent criticism of GCSE grade boundaries and restructuring, with students taking all exams at the end of the year without coursework, the school says its students have risen to the challenge.

Jessica Norkett, head girl of the academy, said: "It's my birthday today and I got 9s and 8s in all of my subjects. I am just really relieved and pleased because of the hard work I have put in and the teachers and it has all paid off."

Peter Vetere, head boy, was another student pleased with his results and says he wants a future in the entertainment industry. He said: "I revised for a long time trying to get the right grades and when the exams came along I was a bit worried about how hard they would be and then when I did the exams I wasn't sure about what grades I would get but today I'm really happy, I have done quite well."

Thetford Grammar

Thetford Grammar School has once again congratulated pupils and teachers on the schools 99pc pass rate, with 97pc of pupils having gained 9 to 4 grades including maths and English.

Michael Brewer, head of the school, said: "In amongst excellent results are many stories of individual successes, with pupils accomplishing their highest possible personal goals.

"It is a pleasure to share in these journeys and to see the positive impact that attending Thetford Grammar School has had on pupils' attainment."

Iceni Academy

The Iceni Academy, Methwold, has also been celebrating with 56pc of its students achieving a grade 4 or above in English and maths.

Nearly one quarter of all students achieved at least one pass at grade 7, 8 or 9.

Principal Stephen Plume said: "This is another set of impressive exam results for Iceni Academy and there are many individual success stories. We are particularly proud of the hard work put n by this year group to exceed all expectations despite various challenges."

Wayland Academy

At Wayland Academy Norfolk in Watton, 58pc of students achieved grades 9 to 4 in English and maths, an improvement from 45pc last year.

Glen Allott, principal, said: "These results wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and passion of our teachers and support staff.

"I would also like to thank the parents and families for their continued support and engagement over the last five years."

IES Breckland

IES Breckland in Brandon, was also pleased to report positive GCSE results, with 54pc of students achieving a grade 4 or above in English and maths.

The school was particularly happy with its science results, with 70pc of pupils achieving a grade 4 and a quarter achieving grade 7 and above.

Jon Winn, principal, said: "We are incredibly proud of all of our students and the outcomes they have achieved, especially Marianna Birkett and Sophia Dubery who achieved seven or more grade 9's including mathematics and English, as well as Millie Ball, Adam Moore, Martyna Raguskaite and Josh Stayton who also secured outstanding GCSE results."
