Future Voices: The most preposterous viral trends that have taken the world by storm
- Credit: PA
In light of the most recent viral craze of a bunch of halfwits dressing up in a red wig, wielding a cricket bat and scaring the bejesus out of innocent passers-by, also known as 'Killer Clowns', now seems the right time to take a look back at other such displays of pathetic tomfoolery.
The 'Killer Clowns' seems like a good place to start, not just as the most recent but equally the most ridiculous and irresponsible trend to have swept our seemingly gormless nation. What a fantastically brilliant way to render people so terrified of being chased by a knife-wielding clown, they feel paralysed within the walls of their own house. More importantly, a woman in Gloucester was stabbed in the leg through the letterbox of her front door by a knife-wielding killer clown, whilst in Berlin, a 16 year-old 'clown' armed with a hammer was stabbed by his 14 year-old acquaintance after failing to see through his clown disguise. This is surely evidence enough that this latest trend is not only impossibly idiotic, it is extremely dangerous for both passers-by and clowns alike.
Next on my list of viral trend bashing is the, 'Don't Judge Challenge', an interesting name which immediately makes me do the opposite of what is commanded. This involves one self-absorbed nitwit filming themselves with spots painted on their face, hair greased into a middle parting and teeth coloured in black, everything classically associated with 'ugliness'. The video then cuts to the participant who, lo and behold, has transformed into a beautiful phoenix with perfect hair, beautiful skin and an array of shining pearly whites. How incredible, what a lesson I have learned: I thought they were ugly, but really they were attractive. That'll teach me not to judge people.
It was inevitable that this final craze would find itself upon this list and that is the, 'Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge'. This entails sucking your lips up into a shot glass for a period of time with the hope of achieving a temporary swollen pout replicating the effects of lip fillers. The actual result is much more serious and often leads to micro-damage to your blood vessels, swelling, bruising and permanent lip indentations by rupturing larger vessels which can result in bleeding and trauma. What has our generation come to when millions of teenagers view permanent facial damage as a good idea?
