2016 promises to be a big year for the sporting world.

One of the main reasons people have been buzzing for 2016 is the jam-packed sporting calendar we have in store. Not only do we have the standard annual events, including the Grand National, Wimbledon and Tour de France, but in 2016 we will be treated to the Rio Olympics and the European Football Championships in Paris.

Kicking off in France on June 10, Euro 2016 will be the 15th instalment of the historic football tournament. Two-time defending champions Spain will be aiming to seal their triple crown, but many other European giants will aim to knock them off their perch. Germany are the current favourites, having won the World Cup in 2014 and they boast a squad of incredible world-class players.

The qualifying rounds were a great success for the home nations, with only Scotland failing to qualify for the finals. There were landmark campaigns for both Northern Ireland and Wales who reached the Euros for the very first time. England will be hoping to build on an impressive unbeaten qualifying performance to put recent poor displays on the grandest stage behind them.

The Three Lions are paired in group B with Russia, Wales and Slovakia, which should be fairly easy for them to navigate.

However once the Euros are over, don't let Post Football Depression get you down because the Olympics and Paralympics are just round the corner (Hooray!).

The summer games begin on August 5, opening the biggest international sports competition worldwide, where over 10,500 proud athletes will represent their country in pursuit of Olympic gold.

The 306 events across 28 sports will take place in the carnival city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and will surely be a fantastic spectacle. There were two new sports added to the program this year. Rugby Sevens will be making its debut and golf will make its return after a 110-year absence. There will also undoubtedly be some local stars from the East Anglia region travelling to Rio for the games. We wish them all the best of luck – do your country proud!

For a sports fanatic like myself I can barely contain my excitement.
