Sexting, fire risk and first aid to be covered at safety workshops for young people
Valuable safety lessons will be taught to Norfolk’s primary school children as part of a series of interactive workshops which are touring the county.
Crucial Crew has been running in Norfolk for more than a decade and welcomes year-six pupils from schools across the county.
The idea is to give children advice on how to stay safe at home, in the community and online, with sessions designed to be fun and interactive.
This year includes topics such as fire safety, household emergencies, sexting, seaside safety, healthy relationships, alcohol and drug awareness, road safety and first aid.
The benefits have been life-changing in some cases, with one participant later witnessing an electrocution and knowing what to do to keep the casualty safe until help arrived.
This year’s project, which involves more than 6,000 children, starts next week for the Breckland area.
From March 5 to 8, 31 schools have signed up to attend including Bawdeswell, Old Buckenham, Mattishall, Attleborough, Scarning, Weeting, Necton, Great Ellingham and Beeston primary schools.
The venue, Letton Hall Christian Conference Centre, has been donated for free and rotary clubs are supporting the event by providing volunteers.
Chairman of Norfolk County Council’s communities committee, councillor Margaret Dewsbury, said: “Aside from transport costs met by the school or parents, the project is offered completely free to all year six pupils in Norfolk.
“It helps to educate young people about the different safety risks in an engaging and memorable way and the feedback from schools has been very positive.
“As funding has diminished, the scheme has relied on local support, sponsorship, donations and volunteers to allow it to continue and we are delighted that it is able to run again this year.”
Other venues include King’s Lynn North fire station between April 23 and 27, The Space in Norwich from May 21 to 25 and Easton College from July 2 to 6.
North Norfolk pupils will be able to take part at Gresham’s Prep School in Holt between October 15 and 17, while Crucial Crew will come to Great Yarmouth’s Haven Holiday Park between November 12 and 16.
