A Norfolk teacher has been banned from the classroom for acting in an 'inappropriate physical manner' with a student on a school trip.

Jason Lambert taught music at Broadland High School in Hoveton but has fired and been black-listed by the General Teaching Council.

Its professional conduct committee found Lambert guilty of 'unacceptable professional conduct' between September 1 2006 and April 1 2009.

He sent text messages to one pupil and acted in an 'inappropriate physical manner' with the same person on a school trip in 2008.

He gave another pupil a lift home after she went shopping in Norwich and it was found that he regularly talked to students by text and telephone.

The hearing heard that he then 'behaved in an unprofessional manner' by discussing the school's investigation against him with the parent of another child.

Carol Dallas, headteacher of Broadland High School, said: 'Our school takes the welfare of its students extremely seriously which is why we terminated Mr Lambert's contract in 2009 and followed this matter up with rigour with the General Teaching Council.

'We expect the highest level of conduct from our staff and make it clear that it is inappropriate and unprofessional to contact students outside of school hours. It is also against all safeguarding advice and we are extremely disappointed that Mr Lambert fell so far short of the standards expected of him.'

The committee chairman, Barbara Hibbert, said Lambert's behaviour amounted to unacceptable professional conduct and that he 'undermined the integrity of the teaching profession'.

'He failed to maintain appropriate professional boundaries in his relationships with children and young people,' she said.

'We therefore impose a prohibition order on the basis that Mr Lambert has consistently failed to understand the seriousness of his actions and has demonstrated an inability to appreciate the consequences of his behaviour.

'This is not a decision which we have taken lightly and in making it our objective is to uphold trust and public confidence in the teaching profession.'

Mr Lambert will not be eligible to re-apply for reinstatement for two years, but does have a right to appeal to the High Court within 28 days.
