Students from Hartismere School, in Eye, got a sneak peak into the art world of bronze but spending a day at Riggle Street Bronze Foundry, near Brandeston.

Art teacher at Hartismere School, Mariah Skellorn, initiated the project she said: 'We are always keen to show our students techniques that are difficult to offer in school time.

'Having followed the work of a growing number of artists currently working with bronze in Suffolk, we were delighted to hear about Alice's portable foundry project.'

The school approached The Arts Society Diss to support the project. The society was able to fund half of the students costs for the workshop, donating £360.

The students carved a variety of designs including plats, faces and church towers into sand blocks.

After the furnace had finished heating bars of bronze it was poured into the moulds.

Young arts co-ordinator for The Arts Society Diss, Georgina Livingstone said: 'The students were amazed at what they were able to produce and now look forward to seeing the final, cleaned up results.

'These will be turned into a collaborative sculpture that will be on permanent display at Hartismere School.'

The foundry is run by artists Alice Andrea Ewing and Freddy Morris.

The bronzes will be on show as part of an exhibition at the Corn Hall in February next year, which will showcase art from Diss and Hartismere High Schools.
