Speculation had been growing online that he might show up at the festival, after he was pictured at The Station Hotel in Framlingham with former Pussycat Doll singer Nicole Scherzinger.

With it being the tenth anniversary of the festival, rumours had been circulating around Henham Park all day that there would be a surprise addition to the line-up, after previous years saw Rudimental and Lily Allen perform unannounced gigs.

And with the first night of the three-day festival drawing to a close, Ed Sheeran made his appearance, coming out on the iArena stage at 11pm.

And as the news spread around the festival site, fans raced to the area to try and catch a glimpse of the musician.

He played songs from both his first and second album during his set, which lasted for more than an hour, and delighted the audience of around 1,000 by performing mashups of his songs with 50 Cent's In Da Club and Iggy Azalea's Fancy.

Among those lucky enough to be in the audience was shop steward Louise Hannan, 32, from Dundee.

She said: 'It was amazing! He was great, we came across it just by chance. He was brilliant, it's probably going to be the highlight of the weekend!'

When news reached social media about the singer's appearance, people took to Twitter to express their delight at going, or their annoyance that they did not attend.

Kelsey Flamey said: 'Oh my god, Ed Sheeran did a last minute gig at Latitude, whhhyyyyy didn't I get a ticket.'

Kyle Baggott said: ' Driving past latitude makes me want to be there so bad and now knowing that Ed Sheeran is there makes it even worse.'

Aaron Jackson tweeted: 'Casually fifth row at the surprise Ed Sheeran concert in the woods latitude fest.'

The 24-year-old who grew up in Framlingham, made the appearance on the back of becoming the first British male solo singer to headline Wembley Stadium.
