Clothes donated to East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) by pop star ambassador Ed Sheeran have raised £6,321.17 for the charity at auction.

Last month Mr Sheeran, who grew up in Framlingham in Suffolk, decided to donate his clothes to charity shops. He took to Twitter to say: 'Given my whole wardrobe to a bunch of charity shops. All stuff worn on shoots, videos and live, if you live around Suffolk it might be near you.'

What followed was a hunt for the donated items by fans and charities alike - only to find they were still all bagged up in the singer's parents' living room. His Dad delivered eight bags of clothing to the EACH fundraising office in Ipswich.

Seven items were initially put up for auction on eBay on March 31, and bids on these items closed last Thursday.

These seven items alone raised £2,236.65, with three items going to the US, one to Belgium and three staying in the U.K.

An Orvis red sweatshirt with a cat design was the most popular item, attracting 77 bids and raising a staggering £1,020.

More than 70 items were then added to the auction on April 3, closing on Sunday. The total raised from all the clothing reached £6,321.17 and around half of the items were bought by overseas fans.

Melanie Chew, EACH director of fundraising and retail, said: 'We're absolutely delighted with the success of the auction of Ed's clothes and would like to thank Ed once again for his very kind donation. We'd also like to thank all the people who made bids to help us achieve such a high sum.

'Not only have Ed's clothes raised valuable funds, but his involvement with EACH has raised our public profile and has gained us a whole new audience thanks to his millions of fans.

'He's a fantastic EACH ambassador and we hope his involvement will inspire other young people to support us.'

The auction topped a busy week for Mr Sheeran, which saw him announce details of his tour and second album 'X', as well as the first play of the first single 'Sing' from the album.

Despite his schedule, he still made time to retweet stories about the auction to his 9.2 million fans.

He also announced he will be donating more clothes to the charity soon.

A number of items have been saved for the opening of EACH's new store in Framlingham.
