Drivers will face disruption when a main bridge on the A12 is closed for repairs.

The Bascule Bridge in Lowestoft will be closed from 6pm on Sunday through to 6am on Monday. A diversion route will be in place and a free bus service will shuttle pedestrians across the bridge.

Road resurfacing work in the town's Station Square is being carried at the same time.

Highways Agency project manager Tim Hughes said: 'We know how much people in Lowestoft depend on the Bascule Bridge every day and are committed to keeping delays to an absolute minimum throughout this work.

'We are also taking the opportunity to carry out some resurfacing work at nearby Station Square while the bridge is closed.'

The closure is the first of around seven planned overnight closures to investigate and repair a faulty hydraulic unit - part of the system which lifts the bridge to allow harbour traffic to pass underneath.

Traffic will be diverted via Oulton Broad and Lake Lothing. Pedestrian access will be maintained when the bridge is closed to only northbound traffic.

Subsequent nights of work are provisionally scheduled for Monday 14, Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16, Thursday 17 and Monday 21 March and Tuesday 22 March.
